ALUMNI IN ACTION
OHIO STATE ALUMNI OF LOS ANGELES
Membership: 1,000+ households
WHO WE ARE
Alumni living in the southern California counties
of Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara, Riverside
and San Bernardino.
WHAT WE DO
• Participate in community service projects such
as blood drives and Ride for One, a bike ride to
raise funds for cancer research
• Represent Ohio State at college fairs around
Los Angeles to share the lifelong benefits of
a Buckeye education
• Present special events with guest speakers
from Ohio State
• Hold a summer barbecue, season kickoff and
annual meeting
• Host an annual Beat Michigan party and gameviewing
events, as well as special receptions for
Buckeye teams playing in the area
RECENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Our membership has increased by more than
500 percent over the past year.
Also in the past year, we tripled the number of
scholarships we offer local students. We expect
to double that number in 2015.
We’re adding six board members to help
increase our social networking and reach out
to younger Buckeyes in the area. We plan to offer
special events and all kinds of gatherings to
encourage them to become part of our family.
We recently created an online directory of
businesses in our membership area that are
owned and operated by alumni. The free listings
offer discounts to members and serve as a
resource for new graduates looking to move to
the Los Angeles area.
We also have a Buckeye employment directory
for job seekers.
FAVORITE OHIO STATE MEMORIES
“I worked in the sports information office and
was in the press box when Woody Hayes dotted
the ‘i’ in Script Ohio. What a moment in Buckeye
history!” —Barry Smith ’82, ’83 MA
“At the Rose Bowl in 1997, I was sitting at about
the 10-yard line and 40 or so rows up. The sun had
left and the sky was misting just enough to make
everything, including the ball, slippery.
“Joe Germaine found David Boston with just
seconds left on the clock. Touchdown Buckeyes!
We won!” —Christi Hovest ’86, ’00 PHD
“I lived in Morrill Tower my freshman year, and it
was a fun, crazy place. My fondest memory there
is when my suite bought a keg and smuggled it
up through the loading dock for a big party the
Friday before finals during spring quarter 1983.
“We also had a King of the Towers contest. Our
suite published a newsletter that featured the
candidates and invited other residents to vote
prior to the big party, where the king was named.
“That year was the most fun I’ve ever had, and
I’m still in touch with many of my suitemates.”
—Carrie Smith ’87
